    Officials 1868/1910c.: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelope, the collection of Official usages largely from the Inland Revenue or Board of Trade with printed return addresses, with 1868 example addressed to Southwell, OHMS buff envelopes to Inland Revnue unused (10) and used (3), Edward VII 1 d. red postal stationery envelopes to Inland Revenue unused (5) in differing sizes, scarce 1888 and 1900m OHMS imprinted 1 d. pink envelopes from Hon. Artillery Co., another from H.A.C with Edward VII ½ d. green, 1 d. pink unused envelope with imprinted 'Edinburgh Municipal and Police Act 1879', Board of Trade 1 d. pink 'Acreage of Crops' 1 d. + 1 d. letter-sheet cancelled Scottish '232' obliterator of Lochgilphead, 1894 1 d. pink "Swine Fever" envelope used and 1895 "Swine Fever" example with 1½ d. lake imprint etc. A scarce and elusive assembly (37 items).

    1842: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelope (Die 23 W.W.) used from Bodmin to Truro, turned inside out and used to Devonport bearing four margin 1841 1 d. red-brown on blued, pl. 22, lettered QF tied by Maltese Cross in blue with "Truro" cds adjacent (Jan 8, 1843). A most unusual usage.

    1851/82: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelopes, unused examples with wrappers for reatiling in bundles, with 1851 pink band printed by De La Rue for "24 envelopes at 2/3 d." containing 10 size B unused examples; 1881 complete pack of 20 size H envelopes with brown band "20 Penny Postage Envelopes 1/10 d." - three examples, 1883 1 d. pinbk envelope with blue band "20 Commercial Penny Post Envelopes 1/9 d.", 1881 unused example with red-brown band "24 C. Size Penny Postage Envelopes 2/2 d.". together with four matching used covers. Scarce.

    The Birth of Postal Stationery 1840: The collection of Mulready wrappers and caricatures (12 items), with 1 d. unused letter-sheet, two 1 d. black letter-sheets used with black Maltese Crosses (one with Atlas Assurance advert inside), Fores Comic envelope No. 1 unused and a used front to Sheerness cancelled by red Maltese Cross (Jarvis Bodily & Hahn listing #15) a used 1 d. front cancelled by red Maltese Cross, 1 d. black wrapper used with 1 d. black that does not belong, and two Valentine Peace envelopes: one used in Guelph, Canada with handstruck 'PAID' in black. Condition obviously varies but a scarce group.

Condition varies but many fine (11 items).

    1840/56: The collection on leaves (22 covers) with 1844 1 d. pink envelopes (3) ex Postal Notice each handstamped large "SPECIMEN" in red, 1855 stamped to order Inland Revenue 1 d. pink envelope with manuscript "Specimen"  (the collector stated that only two other copies are known to him, one in Alan Huggins collection, the other in the G.P.O:archives), Proofs for stamped to order envelopes, further envelopes in differing colours all with "SPECIMEN" overprints in black in varying sizes, together with the 1856 House of Commons report on "Returns relating to Stamped Postage Envelopes". Generally fine, a scarce group (32 items).

"E.E. Emanuel, Goldsmiths to the Queen" used on cover cancelled by Portsmouth sideways duplex,

    1841/1901c.: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelopes, the collection on leaves, unused and used (200+), many with Die numbers noted, 1846 usage of albino impression from Alloa, unused examples overprinted SPECIMEN in red or in black, some up-rated usages noted, used examples with many from the Maltese Cross period, Leamington distinctive Maltese Cross used in October 1841, covers with London No. 3 and No. 7 in Maltese Cross usages, another cancelled by Wessex type "Poole" cds, envelope with "Machine Folded and Gummed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. / at the Great Exhibition 1851" on flap in blue (2 examples) and an unusual embossed example prepared by Waterlow's for the same Exhibition unused and used; two hand-illustrated usages and a fine study of the papers employed. "Heart" of Michael Lockton's Postal Stationery collection which has taken over 50 years to accumulate and would be impossible to replicate to-day.

    British Post Office 1861: Entire letter from St. Thomas to Kingston prepaid at inter-island rate with '4' pence in red manuscript and struck with "♚ / PAID AT ST. THOMAS" in red. Reverse with double arc ST. THOMAS despatch cds (May 15) in black and "Kingston / Jamaica" arrival cds (May 20) in black. Opens well for Exhibit display Gi = £ 500.

    Crimean War 1854: 1 d. red-brown on blued paper, wmk. Small Crown, perf. 16, a single example and a horizontal pair used on 1854 cover, sensibly opened for display to Dover, tied by bold strike of "✵♚✵" obliterator in black. Reverse with "POST OFFICE / BRITISH ARMY" despatch datestamp in blue (Aug. 16), London transit and Dover arrival (Aug. 28) in black. At this date the British Forces were gathered at Varna, Bulgaria, leaving for the Crimea in September 1854. A fine and attractive cover.

    British Post Office 1853: Prepaid cover from Barcelona, Cataluna to Buenos Ayres, Argentina endorsed "por Canarias", with manuscript '10' at right, struck in transit with very fine "♚  / PAID AT TENERIFFE" in black with red manuscript '1/-' rate alongside. Reverse with double arc TENERIFFE cds of despatch (March 16) in black. A rare and fine cover, surprisingly much rarer without the Spanish adhesives, this being the earliest recorded usage of this Crown Circle Gi = £ 3'750. Provenance: Collection Andre Bollen, Köhler, Wiesbaden, 8 Feb. 1983, lot 455; Spink, London, 9-10 March 2005, lot 377.
