Columbian via Marseilles" (European & Australian Mail Co.), tied by '1' numeral obliterators in black, with "Melbourne / Victoria" despatch datestamp (April 15) in black on reverse: underpaid 1/4 d. for ¾ ounce rate. Circular "AUSTRALIE V. SUEZ / MARSEILLE" in red (June 6) and charged at quadruple weight with handstruck '20' décimes due. A charming and most attractive entire, #43 in the Palmer Census. 1854/57: Campbell & Ferguson half-length 3 d. greenish blue, positions 17-18 with pos. 17 showing retouch under 'C' of VICTORIA clearly, the pair with large margins on three sides and shaved at top, on 1858 entire letter from Melbourne to France endorsed "via Marseille" tied by bold circular '1' numeral in black. Reverse with SHIP LETTER / FREE / GPO VICTORIA in red (Oct 16) and carried on the "Victoria" from Sydney (Oct 11), the "Oneida" from Galle and the P&O "Bengal" from Aden. Circular "AUSTRALIE V. Carried on the "Avoca" to Galle, the "Hindostan" to Alexandria and from there on the "Nyanza" to Brindisi. Mailed by the newly opened Brindisi route with circular entry mark in red (July 9).
