    1840: 1d. black, plate 1a, two single adhesives belonging together, lettered PK & PL, early printing with clear to large margins tied by red MC to second sheet of entire letter internally dated May 14, 1840 and directed to Putney Heath. Reverse with rectangular datestamp of the same day in red. Horizontal and vertical file folds, nevertheless an interesting early May 1840 double rate cover from the first plate of the Penny Black.     1840: 1d. black, plate 1b, lettered DA, a fine example with fair to huge margins and a large sheet margin at left showing no inscription at the height of the fourth row, merely tied by black MC to cover from Sunning Hill to Bagshot, Surrey. The obverse is struck by a superb "SUNNING HILL" handstamp without date in black, reverse with CHERTSEY transit cds (Sept 28, 1840). Horizontal file fold well away from adhesive and postmarks, an attractive usage, cert. Raybaudi (1989).

    1840: 1d. black, plate 3, lettered MC, a superb example with large to enormous margins all round including parts of the upper neighbouring stamp, merely tied by two strikes of MC in red to mourning cover from London to Bridgnorth, Shropshire. The obverse shows a handwritten "Above rate" and is struck by a two-line "T.P / Acton" due handstamp in black. Reverse with London despatch cds (July 23, 1840). An appealing fresh cover, opinion Holcombe (1991).

    1854: 1s. green Embossed, Die 2, a fine and fresh cut-square example, large margins all round, tied by numeral '466' in bars of Liverpool, matching despatch cds, PAID handstamp in red and US '5 cents' due handstamp in red alongside, on cover to New York, the cover endorsed "p. Steamship 24th May". An appealing usage to pay the 1s. rate to the point of embarkation, the receiver had to pay 5 cents for the residual journey. Signed Goebel Gi = £ 1'900.

    1848: 10d. brown Embossed from the 1862 re-issue print run, Die 2, a superb cut-square example in vivid colour, large margins at base and left, enormous top right corner sheet margin (10 & 5 mm.), cancelled by "WC / 20" in bars handstamp, on envelope with full contents, directed to Sialkot, Punjab, the cover endorsed "via Marseilles". Reverse with "CHARING CROSS WC JU 18 63" despatch, BOMBAY transit (July 9, 63) and SEALKOTE arrival (July 18, 63) cds's, all in red. Some wrinkles do not distract from this exceptional late usage of the Embossed 10d. adhesive in the June 1863 rate, in addition a splendid corner marginal example. Certs. E. Diena (1979), Vaccari (2004) Gi = £ 3'200+.rnNote: Due to change in postal rates in 1855 the 10d. adhesive was withdrawn, but with increase in demand in 1862 it was re-issued and to date only eight examples on cover are known.

Horizontal file fold well away from the adhesives, a correct and appealing franking to pay the 8d. rate to the Netherlands in effect from January 1855.

Also double rate printed matter entire letter directed to St. Gallen, Switzerland bearing ½d. rose plate 3 in a horizontal pair, a fine and fresh multiple tied by numeral "LONDON 1 AP 71 - 10" duplex datestamp, red PD in oval alongside, reverse with arrival cds (April 3, 1871). An attractive and interesting printed matter item, despatched by the London City Swiss Club, a society of Swiss businessmen in London.

    1872-73: 6d. deep chestnut, Plate 12, a fresh and fine example in a deep shade, well perforated, tied by crisp "LONDON SW JU 19 72 / SW 28" duplex datestamp with PD in oval in red alongside on mourning cover to Orkedalen, Norway. The obverse was struck with CHRISTIANIA transit (June 24, 1872) and ORKEDALEN arrival (June 29) cds's in black as well as with a '3d' handstamp in red which were credited from the United Kingdom to Norway. Reverse with "CHRISTANIA OMK." cds (June 23). A very attractive cover to an astonishingly unusual destination.
