    1851 (Sept 18): Cover from Montreal to Toronto bearing 1851 Prince Albert 6 d. slate violet on laid paper, a fresh and fine adhesive with good to huge margins, tied by seven ring target obliterator. "MONTREAL L.C. SP 18 1851" datestamp in red alongside. Reverse with Toronto arrival cds (Sept 21). Vertical file fold at right of stamp, a most attractive and scarce double rate cover. Cert. BPA (1979).rnNote: The Province of Canada began issuing stamps on April 23, 1851, designed by Sir Sandford Fleming and processed together with the 3 d. & 12 d. adhesives by the firm of Rawdon, Wright, Hatch and Edson of New York. In April 1851, the rate for inland letters to Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island was 3 d. per ½ oz.

    1852-57: Envelope from Kingston to Port Hope bearing Beaver 3 d. red on handmade wove paper, a fine and fresh example with good margins all round, tied by '18' ring target obliterator with despatch "KINGSTON JU 10 1858" cds alongside. Reverse with "PORT HOPE" arrival cds of the following day. A clean and fine cover, cert. V. G. Greene (1984).

    1852 (Nov 10): Envelope from Montreal to New York bearing 1852-57 Beaver 3 d. brown-red on handmade wove paper in a vertical pair, a multiple with good to large margins all round and fresh colour, cancelled by two strikes of seven ring target obliterator with superb despatch "MONTREAL L.C. NO 10 1852" cds, straight line PAID and matching framed CANADA in arc exchange office handstamp, all in red alongside. Light file fold well away from the franking just mentioned for accuracy, a clean and fine cover, an exceptional cross border uage of the Beaver adhesive.

    1858 (March 17): Envelope from Toronto to Nashville TN, bearing 1857 Prince Albert 6 d. grey-lilac on machine-made thick hard wove paper, an adhesive with clear to mostly large margins, tied by grid cancel obliterator with superb despatch "TORONTO C.W. MAR 17 1858" cds in black and straight line PAID handstamp in red alongside. Some edge wear, a desirable cover, only 26 covers to the United States are known with this paper variety, this being the only one recorded to the southern states. Cert. BPA (1997).

    Prince Edward Island 1861: 2 d. rose, Die I perf. 9, a fine and fresh example, lightly tied by 'Bars in Oval' obliterator to cover to Charlottetown. Reverse with crisp "SUMMERSIDE P.E. ISLAND" despatch cds (Aug 1, 1862) and indistinct arrival cds (Aug 4), both in black. Light vertical fold at right of adhesive, some edge toning, a rare correct usage to pay the postage on the island. Opinion Holcombe (1997).
