"V.R.I." with thick "V" 1900 (Post March): 3 d. on 3 d. ultramarine, the spectacular irregular block of 32 from Setting V (blocks of 12 and 20 rejoined), all stamps showing "Surcharge Double" variety, positions 25-26/31-36/37-42/43-48/49-54/55-60, of excellent colour and appearance with Plate Number "1" at base and showing Surcharge Double on thin "V" stamps (28), Surcharge Double on thick "V" stamps (3) and a single example of Surcharge Double / Inverted "1" for "I". Illustrated in Hisey & Bartshe on page 214. A few minor imperfections, none affecting the appearance, but only one pane of 60 stamps was originally found and thus the surcharge double / Inverted "1" for "I" on position 37 is entirely unique - notwithstanding that the multiple represents 53% of the possible examples. A fantastic and important multiple for the specialist Gi = £ 13'400++.rnrnProvenance: Collection 'Bloemfontein', Argyll Etkin, London, 1 Dec 1999, lot 204.rnrnNote: These stamps were obtained in 1901 from Sergeant Ledgerwood of the Scots Greys at the Military P.O. in Bloemfontein on the morning of issue.
