Panama' at lower left, with manuscript Forwarding Agent's notation on reverse "Acheminé de Lima le 5 Août 45 par vos bien dévoués serviteurs et amis, Thomas La Chambre et Co." and notation of weight '23.5' grams on obverse at left. Superb strike of double ring "PANAMA / *" Consular Office datestamp in red (Aug 21) dated 1843 altered to 1845 in manuscript with framed "P.P." below. Mailed prepaid via England with 'Angl. Boulogne' on front (Oct 5) and Morlaix arrival (Oct 8). Charged in manuscript on reverse at 5 francs 80 centimes. Rare and very fine entire.

    1845 (Sept 12): Entire letter from Arequipa, Peru to Morlaix, France, endorsed 'p. Panama' at lower left, with manuscript Forwarding Agent's notation on reverse "Acheminé de Lima le 4 8br (Oct) 45 par vos bien dévoués serviteurs, Thomas La Chambre et Co." to Panama with further notation below "Acheminé de Panama le 22 8br 1845 par L. Lewis" and placed in the mails and struck on front with perfect impression of British P.O. double ring undated "PANAMA" in black. Thence via 'Kingston / Jamaica' with cds (Nov 1) in black and London (Dec 5) where 'COLONIES / &c ART.12' applied in red, to Morlaix where charged '40' décimes due to pay. Rare and superb.

Some minor crinkling to the envelope but a rare usage with interesting content regarding a journey from Chagres to Gatun through swamps and the nascent road and railroad building taking place.rn

    1871: Great Britain 1 s. green pl. 4, two examples used on 1871 entire letter to Acapulco, Mexico endorsed 'per Cuban via Liverpool' tied by 'Manchester / 498' duplexes on despatch (Feb 4). The cover sent via Forwarding Agent in Panama with oval cachet "ENCAMINADA POR / HORQUET POYLO & CA / PANAMA" in blue (deleted thereafter from address), and struck with oval "COLON / DEBE / DE ULTRAMAR" in green with charge '20' centavos in manuscript. A fine and rare entire.

    Wreck Mail 1887/88: 10 c. black on yellow, single example tied to 1892 cover to Vienna endorsed 'via New York' by Colon duplex in blue (Jan 13). Carried on the ill-fated North German Lloyd Steamer 'Eider' which sank off the Isle of Wight with much heroism displayed by the RNLI in saving the passengers and crew on board on January 31. The envelope struck with framed "Gehoben aus dem / geschetterten Schiff / "Eider" in violet with 'Franco' in black applied to denote payment. Reverse with New York transit cds (Jan 21) and Austrian P.O. Reseal label and arrival cds (March 9). Interesting article accompanies a fine and rare cover.rnrnNote: Friedrich Trump, grandfather of 45th U.S. President Donald Trump, emigrated from Bremen, Germany, to New York aboard the 'Eider' in 1885 at the age of 16. He made his fortune running brothels during the Klondike Gold Rush. Returning to Bavaria he was accused of avoiding the Military draft and denied citizenship and returned to the USA.

    British Packet Agency 1892/96: 10 c. orange used on 1902 cover to Brighton (Mallet correspondence) tied by superb BRITISH PACKET AGENCY / PANAMA circular datestamp (June 11) in violet. Brighton arrival cds (July 3) in black alongside embossed British 'Post Office' crest. Minor peripheral aging but a superb and rare usage - two years earlier than recorded by Parmenter.

    1895: Colombian Printed Official AR Registration envelope 'Bulletin de Vérification en Retour' for the Panama Office, addressed to the French Paquebot 'Labrador' and struck with superb circular LIGNE D / PAQ. FR. No. 2 datestamp (May 22) in blue of the Paquebot 'Canada' whilst at Colon. Reverse with Bordeaux cds (June 16) when the 'Canada' reached its destination. Pinholes at left where the cover was presumably hung awaiting delivery. Rare.

    Wreck Mail 1908: USA 2 c. red postal stationery envelope used from Los Angeles (Nov 16) to Panama, two stamps floated off due to the mail being recovered from the wreck of the Steamer 'Finance' with label on reverse "Post Office New York, NY / InquiryDepartment / The piece of mail herewith was recovered from wreck of the Steamer Finance, which was sunk / through collision with steamer Georgic, Thursday, Nov 26, 1908" tied by Panama arrival cds. 4 people died in the collision, with Capt. Mowbray of the Finance drawing his gun when ordering women and children to go to the lifeboats first (article attached). Scarce and fine for this.
