1854 (Aug 1): 4 d. deep dull blue, a fine horizontal pair, First Printing, Sone 1, with close to large margins all round and showing portion of adjoining stamps above, tied by "11" numeral obliterator of Freemantle to an early double rate cover to Maidstone, Kent, dated at lower left "W. Australia 12. Sept. 1854" and again, alongside the adhesives "18/9/54" with oval 'POST OFFICE / Crown / FREEMANTLE / WESTERN AUSTRALIA' handstamp in red. Reverse with London and Maidstone datestamps (Dec 4 and 5) and rated at '1s.' to pay in manuscript. A remarkable and very early cover of great scarcity. Cert. Ceremuga (2018).rnrnNote: The stamps at this date are almost certainly from Stone 1. The pair on the letter are shifted impressions to the right of the frames which can be seen above, this is a characteristic of the ninth horizontal row of the sheet thus this pair is from Row 9 / Stamps 3-4 on the Intermediate Stone of 60 (or positions 163-164, 173-174, 178-179 depending on which pane they came from). It is also interesting to note that the early printings of August 1854 totalled 100 sheets, only 40 of which were used in the early months of issue, the rest were placed on one side to be condemned. The cover with the original 1 s. franking raised by the addition of the 1 d. and the 2 d. adhesives (and annotated as such in red at left "3d." in red ink). 'Paid / London' transit cds on front (March 6) with '1' (penny) credit in manuscript; reverse with 'St. John's / NB' cds of receipt (March 26) in black. The address panel with minor closed tear at base, file fold below the adhesives and some slight repairs to the top and the corners of the envelope, otherwise a truly marvellous three colour franking to a most exotic destination for Australian Colonial Mail. Lake Lefroy Goldfield Bicycle Service 1897 (April): Lithographed at the 'Coolgardie Miner & Pioneer' Printing Office, Lake Lefroy Goldfield 6 d. rose red on yellowish buff paper with green reverse, perf. 12, a fine unused example. A rare Local issue in much above average quality.rnrnNote: The service ran from Lake Lefroy to Coolgardie, a distance of 45 miles, Kalgoorlie and other local Goldfield camps. It was finally closed down in June 1897 when the Government mailcoach service commenced to Red Hill. Healy Mail Service, 1 s. and 2 s. 6 d. blue, lithographed on white wove paper, no wmk., rough perf. 12, the extraordinary matching vertical strips of five unused with sheet margin at top, both strips are positions 3/8/13/18/23, each with variety "Imperforate Between Horizontally" between second, third and fourth stamp, from the sheets of 35 broken up in 1986, fresh and fine with slightly browned og. Oldham care of James Healy in Coolgardie and re-addressed to him at Mount Margaret endorsed "Per Cyclist", with 1895 2 s. 6 d. blue tied by "Per COOLGARDIE CYCLE EXPRESS CO., / HUNT STREET" in violet. Reverse with 'Travelling P.O. / Great Southern Railway' cds (July 18) and part Coolgardie cds.
