Berlad Postal Fraud 1859: 40 pa. blue on yellowish paper, a remarkable re-used example with large margins all round, applied to cover to Galatz by glueing the obverse of the stamp to the cover, then the Postmaster (who was later indicted and sacked in November 1859) applied the BERLAD / MOLDOVA datestamp (8/9) in blue (Kiriac fig. 272) largely obscuring the trace of the original usage. Further information strike of the despatch datestamp at right and reverse with 'Galatz / Moldova' cds of receipt (10/9) in blue. Closed spike hole on front panel but an extraordinary and very rare cover, of the five 'Postal Fraud' usages recorded from Berlad, this is the sole example with a single stamp and the only recorded example placed 'face-down' on to the letter-sheet. Illustrated in Handbook I on page 176. Signed Heimbüchler.

1869: 10 bani indigo (Transfer type 2) and 15 bani orange, fresh colours and ample to enormous margins, tied by "T. SEVERIN DIM 14/12" (1871) cds (Kiriac T69 fig. 483) to envelope to Bucharest with framed P.D. alongside, reverse with Austrian "ALT-ORSOVA 15/12" transit and Romanian thimble "BUCURESCI 21 DEC 71" arrival cds's. Some toning and file fold away from the stamps, reverse with handwritten calculations, but a very interesting cover. Although an inland cover by definition it was first sent from Turnu Severin to the harbour of Orsova in Hungary where it was given to a ship to be mailed down the Danube and then onwards to Bucharest. Therefore, this cover had to be franked with the 25 bani rate for letters abroad instead of the 10 bani inland rate. An unusual usage rarely seen.
