Chalons 1857/69: 2 d. blue in dull greyish shade with dry print and 1860/67 6 d. slate-violet, touched to large margins, used on 1863 printed cover from 'Private Observatory, Hobart Town' to London endorsed "via Marseilles", tied by mute obliterators of Hobart with circular "GENERAL POST OFFICE / HOBART TOWN / ♚" datestamp in red (Aug 22) with London arrival cds (Oct 15) in red alongside. The 10 d. rate was introduced in Great Britain on June 3, 1863 - this cover was mailed at the new rate on the first 'homeward' voyage, carried by the "Madras" to Galle, thence on the "Candia" to Suez and the "Euxine" from Alexandria to Marseilles.
