Levant. 1853: Napoleon imperf. 10 c. bistre, shaved at left, 20 c. blue, 40 c. orange, and 80 c. carmine, cut in at top, otherwise broad to ample margins all round, the 40 c. with some wrinkles and fold, tied by two strikes of dotted anchor postmark in blue to triple weight outer letter sheet from Constantinople to Lyon with "Neva 24 Juin 61" ship cds in blue and framed "Paquebots de la Méditerranée" in red alongside as well as Marseilles transit and Lyon arrival cds's (July 31, 1861) on reverse. Réunion. 1840: Cover to France struck with circular DIR.TION DES POSTES DE L'ISLE DE BOURBON / ST. DENIS handstamp in black, struck on entry into France with 'Outre-Mer / Nantes' cds in red. Reverse with slight tear on flap and Bordeaux and Hyeres cds's (July 27), charged 11 décimes due in manuscript. A rare handstamp and a scarce cover.

Réunion. 1852: Typeset 15 c. black on grey-blue paper, Type 3 of the four types, a magnificent unused example with enormous margins all round. Illustrated on page 40 in the Brun/Chandonson book (2008), and it must be noted from this book that Type 3 is by the far rarest of the four types either mint or used with just 4 unused and 2 used examples known. A wonderful stamp of stunning appearance for such a rarity. Signed Calves. General Colonies issues overprinted with Réunion 1891: 80 c. rose Cérès (block of 8 and 2), 1 fr. olive Sage (block of 8 & 2, one stamp detached and replaced by another 1 fr. stamp not originating from this cover) and 25 c. black/rose Alphée Dubois, all tied by blue cds's "RÉUNION St.-DENIS 9. FEVR. 92" to large format cover with corner faults, sent registered to Waterberg (Transvaal, South Africa), blue French framed "R" mark and red British "Registered Mauritius" (Feb 11) alongside, endorsed "via Maurice - Natal" with Natal arrival mark on the reverse. 1919 (Oct 31): Type-written Official notice in French declaring the 'Constantinople-Bucharest' Airmail Service to be closed from the following day, largely due to a Sept 1919 cyclone that caused 2 million francs worth of damage and some resulting vandalism, together with the ensuing fire on Oct 6, 1919 which caused a further 3 million francs worth of damage. The Notice is struck with oval 'Poste Aerienne / Aéronautique / Armées d'Orient / Le Capitaine Bladinieres' cachet at base (possibly the Unit Adjutant) and struck at top with the Offcial 'thin' type ARMÉES ALLIÉES EN ORIENT / POSTE AÉRIENNE in violet. Rare and in all probability, a unique document, as sent to the Turkish newspaper 'Tasvir-i-Ekvir'. Illustrated by G. Sassower in his article in the 'London Philatelist' in May 2000 on page 131.
