    Oil Rivers 1892: 2 d. grey-green & carmine and 5 d. dull purple & blue, used on 1893 registered cover to Plymouth tied by "OLD CALABAR RIVER" cds's in black (Dec 11). Large "R" in black at left and 5 d. tied in transit in London (9 Jan 1894). Plymouth arrival on reverse of an attractive cover.

    1895 (Dec 21): 2½ d. blue single franking on letter from QUA IBOE  tied by two voilet strikes of the type A cds to Belfast. On the front a PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR. PACKET/6 FE 96 cds in red. On the reverse, a transit of OPOBO RIVER A (22 Dec) and a Belfast arrival cds (7 Feb 1896). The violet strike of QUA IBOE is very unusual, the letter fresh and very fine.

    1898: Soldier's Letter to South Kensington, London, endorsed "No Stamps obtainable, Frank Bevan, Niger Expeditionary Force", struck with octagonal framed "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY / CHARTERED & LIMITED / 13 JAN 1898 / POST OFFICE / AKASSA" handstamp in violet (Gi Type 5) applied on obverse. "Liverpool / Br. Packet" (Feb 15) cds in black on reverse with London arrival of the same day, charged with handstruck "2D." to pay with manuscript "½" adjacent. Scarce and fine cover.

    1899: Soldier's Letter to Lee, London, endorsed at top "From No. 85288 R.A. Sergt. J. Smith, No. 3 Battery, RA, West Africa" and, at base, "On Active Service, no Stamps Obtainable", the reverse with "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY / CHARTERED & LIMITED / 29 MAY 1899 / POST OFFICE / BURUTU" handstamp in violet (Gi Type 6). Charged with handstruck "2d." due to pay in violet on obverse. Soiling and restoration to envelope at left but a scarce cover.
