AEON" cachet in red - the ship was wrecked near Christmas Island (now Kiritimati, Kiribati) on July 18, 1908. 1939: ½ d., 1 d., 1½ d. and 2 d. used on January 2, 1942 cover (with contents) from Betio, Tarawa (under Japanese Occupation) to Dr. Macpherson, Western Pacific High Commission in Suva, Fiji tied by "Tarawa / Gilbert and Ellice Islands / Colony" cds's in violet and struck with four line "Launch Mail from / Territory pro. tem. / enemy occupied / ÷v!v÷" cachet in violet. 1940: Cover from Australia to Ocean Island with 2 d. carmine tied by "Goulburn" machine cancel (Nov 28). Reseal "OPENED BY CENSOR" in red at left tied in violet and cover received back in Sydney (Jan 23, 1941) with cds on reverse; after the mail had been recovered from the "S.S. Triona" which had been sunk by the Japanese but the mail had survived. Cover endorsed in manuscript "Raider Mail" in red crayon on Ocean Island to explain the delay. 1922/74: The genesis of a Postal History exhibit collection (71 items) with 1938 NZ 1 d. tied "Christmas Island", 1942 cover to Sir Harry Luke ex Phoenix Islands, 1944 cover with ½ d. pair tied by GARDNER ISLAND cds's, 1945 cover from Tarawa to Funafuti with fine "PASSED BY CENSOR / No. 8" in black and a further strike of this rare mark on cover to APO 709 (Solomon Islands), 1945 cover with 2 d. and framed "PASSED BY CENSOR / No. 3" at Funafuti; 1950/60's "Christmas Island" Military usages, 1961 cover with 2 d. tied by "Hull Island" cds, 1964 cover with 1 s. and 2 s. adhesives used as Postage Dues, thereafter with further scarce covers from Abaiang, Abemama, Beru, Betio, Butaritari, Funafuti, Hull Island, Marakei, Nonouti, Nui, Nukufetau, Tarawa, Willis Island Radio Station etc. A fine and unusual lot.Starting bid : 500 CHFHammer price : 500 CHF
