Egypt 1856 (March 21): Prepaid Envelope from Alexandria to Cork, Ireland, endorsed "via Marseilles", crowned "PAID AT ALEXANDRIA" in red on front, double arc "ALEXANDRIA MR 21 1856" despatch datestamp in blue and London transit (April 2) cds on red alongside. Reverse with CORK arrival (April 3) cds in blue. Paid with '2/-' sh. upon despatch, noted in red crayon on front. British Post Office 1857: Entire letter from Alexandria to London endorsed "pr. Steamer via Marseille" prepaid with "9d." in red manuscript, struck with very fine "♚ / PAID AT ALEXANDRIA" in red with double arc despatch cds (July 22) in blue at left. British Post Office 1863: Cover from Cairo to Sheffield prepaid with "6d." in red manuscript, struck with typically over-inked "♚ / PAID AT CAIRO" in red (or an over-use of the linseed oil in the ink make-up) with single ring despatch cds (Dec. 10) in blue at left. Reverse with repaired flap fault and Sheffield (Dec. 23) arrival cds. Rare: less than a dozen examples of this handstamp are recorded, this is a very late use in December 1863 and the only '6d.' rate recorded in the Karl Louis Card Index.
