1832 (Feb 28): Large part of letter from Fremantle to 'Sidney' Post Office, New South Wales endorsed at lower left "To be forwarded to his place of residence in the Colony". The cover despatched on the 'Bee' on March 15, 1832 which arrived at Sydney on 6 April, was charged '4' (pence) in manuscript as an incoming Ship Letter and struck with fair only "♛ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / SYDNEY" in black of arrival. Extremely rare: the earliest recorded Inter-Colonial letter from Western Australia.rnNote: The writer was William Nairne Clark, notary public and publisher who arrived in Fremantle in March 1831 on the 'Eliza'. The letter notes "there is not one practising solicitor in the Colony...as Stone is incapacitated and is not liked. There is thus a fine opening for anyone, as the Courts will be inundated with business for some time to come". On 16 August 1832, Clark accosted a prominent merchant in a Freemantle street, one George French Johnson, calling him a "Scoundrel and a blackguard". Challenged to a duel with pistols, Clark met Johnson on the following morning at Richmond House near Fremantle and mortally wounded him - the only fatal duel ever fought in the Colony. Clark was tried for manslaughter and acquitted by the Jury.rnProvenance: Collection Ludwig Baetgen, Edgar Mohrmann, 16 Sept 2004; Collection Brian Peace, Prestige, Melbourne, 27 July 2009, lot 1024.Starting bid : 3,000.00 CHFHammer price : 3,000.00 CHFLot# : 10448 Western Australia

Very few Western Australia entires bear Accountancy markings, an extremely rare and famous entire letter in the foremost quality.rnNote: The writer was a Catholic priest, one John Brady, who had ministered to Irish convicts in New South Wales from 1838. Appointed Vicar-General of Western Australia in 1843, he published, in English & French, a dictionary of the local Aborigine language. Bardy was appointed Bishop of Perth in Rome in 1845 and returned with 27 missionaries, only one of whom was fluent in English.
