    Printed at the Statistical Department in Shanghai 1878: The Essay Sheet of the 5 candarin in brownish-ochre, on thick paper, Setting I, perforated 12½, with the additional extra circle near the left claw of the Large Dragon, the sheet with near complete outer sheet margins, missing just a 10 mm. section of the outer margin at lower right, in a rich deep shade and perfectly centred; one or two black surface specks where the ink had not correctly suffused and possibly the reason why the brownish-ochre shade was not selected as the issued colour, horizontal crease along the lower row and minor bend on position 1, ungummed. The sole recorded sheet with Trial perforation 12½ as would later be adopted.     1897: ½ c. on 3 ca. yellow-brown in an interpanneau pair, 1 c. on 1 ca. vermilion and 4 c. on 4 ca. rose-pink in a vertical pair all tied to 1899 cover (with handstruck "H.B.M. Consulate / G.M.H. Playfair" in violet with manuscript "Ningpo" below) to France by "NINGPO" Dollar Chops (March 4) in black, "SHANGHAI" Dollar Chop of transit alongside (March 5). Obverse with Hong Kong 1891 10 c. purple on red (Gi 38) tied by "Shanghai" cds (March 6) for onward transmission. Carried on French Steamer "Sydney" with "Ligne N / Paq. Fr. No. 6" octagonal datestamp on reverse. Slight flap tear but an attractive and very scarce combination usage.

    1900: Picture postcard b/w  'Pagode bei Shanghai' addressed to Berlin, franked by Chinese Imperial Post ½ c. brown (4) and 1 c. buff (2)  cancelled "TIENTSIN - 11 DEC  00" to pay the internal rate to Shanghai, there handed over to the French Post Office and uprated by Allegorie 10 c. black on lila (MI Nr. 2) covering seamail to Marseille and Berlin where te card arrived on January 29th 01.

    1928: Shanghai letter franked 1C junk with Perfin HSBC, cancelled "SHANGHAI LOCAL POST" somewhat roughly opened and a "Express" letter on HAPAG stationery franked with 11C for local express fee bearing a green on buff Chinese express label. The latter has a back flap missing. Attractive pair.

    1878/1942: Collection on old Album leaves and in a stock book in mainly used condition, starting with four large dragons. Dowager Empress 9 ca mint. (SG.22).  Red revenue one cent (SG 88) used "CUSTOMS SWATOW", then with a good run to the end of the Period including the "Industry" Miniature sheet. French POs and Japanese POs are also well represented. Highly recommended lot.

    1894-1950: Predominantly used collection of China and Chinese stamps beginning with 1894 1c-3c, a vertical pair 1897 overprint 1c (large type 2.5mm below characters), 5 dollars (SG131) to the early issues of People's Republic. There is also some scope for postmark collectors, with among others a crisp centrally struck bilingual cachet "SHASI" on 2c (SG165). Furthermore a range of foreign POs such as German, French, Japanese etc.
