Embossed Issues 1857/61: 1 d. embossed on deeply blued paper, a horizontal strip of three used on cover from Pietermaritzburg to Dr. Sutherland, Surgeon General, Colonial Office in Durban, the strip with large margins all round and neatly tied by oval lozenge of dots cancellation in black. File fold away from the adhesives and reverse with manuscript notations of provenance. An exceptional and truly remarkable cover for the connoisseur of classic philately. Signed Holcombe. Cert. 1877: Stampless Official cover, countersigned at lower left by Sir Theophilus Shepstone, Special Commissioner to the Transvaal, mailed from Newcastle to His Excellency, Sir Bartle Frere, King William's Town, Eastern Frontier, Cape Colony, struck with "No. 20 PO / NATAL" cds on despatch (Christmas Day) in black. 'East London' transit cds (Jan 9, 1878) alongside and faint 'King William's Town' arrival cds of arrival. Reverse with 'GPO / Natal' transit cds (Dec 28). A rare cover - at this date Sir Bartle Frere was involved in the 9th Frontier War, having arrived in Southern Africa in March 1877 two weeks prior to the annexation of the Transvaal by Sir Theophilus. 1895 (March 18): Locally surcharged HALF on 1 d. rose unused, a complete left pane of 60 ( 6 x 10) from the First Setting of 24 (12 x 2) forme, showing the variety "Surcharge Double" on positions 13-18 and 19-24, the second surcharge coincident in first coloumn and widening across the pane; with Plate '3' in margin at lower left, fresh and fine, large part or unmounted og. Some minor splitting and piece of selvedge missing at upper left but a pane of superb appearance and very rare. Cert. Small Star, an imperforate Proof with ample to large margins, with manuscript "Specimen" in ink; 1863: De La Rue Proof, 1 d. value in carmine-red, imperforate on unwatermaked paper without gum, of beautiful rich colour. Diena), three examples with SPECIMEN handstamp in violet (3) including one example with 'No Stop' error, together with a fascinating hand written manuscript dated 15 May 1895 copied from the 'Stamp Collector's Journal'.
