    1799 (Oct 2): Entire letter written (12 Vendemaire, Year 7) from Alexandria to Cairo, mailed prior to the issue of handstamps (believed to be October 18, 1799) and endorsed on reverse 'cette lettre est recommandée au Co. Ravel, il voudrait bien la remettre au mains propre'.  The inside of the letter is a receipt for letters to be sent from Alexandria to Marseille, one of which contained 500 francs in coin. Despite the Battle of the Nile (Aboukir), the British had yet to install an effective blockade. Rare and unusual entire.
