    1854 (Feb 4): Envelope from Alexandria to Mississippi, USA struck on reverse with British P.O. ALEXANDRIA double arc cds in black, London red transit cds (Feb 17) and 'Boston / Br. Pkt.' datestamp (March 7) in black. Front of cover with manuscript '1s.' (shilling) and '40' (cents) charge for Transatlantic rate and with Inland fee added, struck with '45' rate marking in black. A scarce destination for Egyptian mail at this date.

    Note: This letter was carried on the Transatlantic leg of it's journey by the Cunard Steamer "Alps" from Liverpool to Boston. The ship was a substitute for the Niagara which called into duty as a Military Transport ship for the Crimean campaign. This was the sole voyage made by the "Alps" on behalf of Cunard.
