Lot# 1322 - 182-185 Auction

  • Lot# : 1322 Austrian Levant

1463 (July 24): Astonishingly early entire letter from Constantinople to Venice, replete with string attached on flap, disinfected by toasting probably on arrival from the East. No arrival date is mentioned but the journey at this date took nearly four months.
Note: The Ottoman Turks had largely overrun the Eastern Byzantine Empire and expelled the Seljuk Turks by 1460. They encouraged foreign merchants to settle and continue trading with the West from their enclaves in Galata, Pera and the Black Sea area.
