1863/74: Octagonal 1 s. deep blue on blued on Saunders paper, a sheet marginal example used on 1871 cover endorsed "via Trieste" to Basel, Switzerland, the endorsement corrected to "via Brindisi", tied by barred numeral "10" of Warrnambool in black. Framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / VIA BRINDISI" in black due to a second stamp, probably a 3 d. adhesive, being lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the marking was applied. 'London / Paid' transit (April 21) in red and backstamped at Warrnambool (Feb 25), Melbourne (Feb 28) and in Basel. Illustrated and discussed in the Ben Palmer census on page 181. A fine and most unusual cover.rnrnProvenance: RL, London, 13 Sept 1977, ex lot 177.rn Phila Covers (Allan Levy) sale 16, Melbourne, 19 July 1985, lot 38.rn Collection Rod Perry, DF, Zurich, 23-25 May 1988, lot 10967.rn Prestige, Melbourne, 22 April 2006, lot 472.rn Mossgreen, Melbourne, 5 March 2015, lot 119.rnrnNote: Ben Palmer states that there is speculation whether a letter could have been correctly franked via Brindisi at this date. The previous owner of the cover believed that a second stamp, probably a 3 d. adhesive was lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the due marking was applied. However there is no evidence as to where the 3 d. adhesive was placed unless applied over the selvedge at right. This describer believes the cover was correctly franked for the Trieste rate for a ¼ ounce letter and whilst the endorsement was altered, no further stamps were applied for the Brindisi increment.Starting bid : 1,000 CHFHammer price : not sold
