    1852: Laureated 3 d. dull yellow-green on greyish blue wove paper, the famous block of fifteen (3 x 5) positions 1-3 / 41-43, marginal at base with small part imprint "Engd. o(n steel)" and at top with 45 mm. sheet maregin at left showing scrolled ornamental border, handstamped "STAMP OFFICE" with circular "STOREKEEPER'S DEPT. NSW" handstamp below showing Royal Arms, inscribed in manuscript "Five of these stamps given this day to Sir Daniel Cooper as requested. 7 Oct '60". The adhesives in wondrously fresh condition with large margin at right showing portions of all five adjoining stamps, folded in several places with light creases not detracting from the appearance, the multiple of brilliant fresh colour with large part near full original gum. The most impressive and iconic multiple of New South Wales and possibly Australian philately, the provenance alone being a roll-call of the most renowned and celebrated philatelists of all time. An item of the foremost importance to worldwide classic philately Gi = £ 75'000+.rnrnNote: The block was cut from a part sheet of thirty-eight stamps presented to Sir Daniel Cooper (1821-1902), first Baronet of Woollahra, speaker of the Legislative Assembly of NSW, he returned to Great Britain in 1861 (all former describers of this block have stated he was Governor of NSW (untrue) and that the manuscript endorsement is 1870 - this was not possible and it clearly reads '60). He became President of 'The Philatelic Society, London' and was chair of the original meeting on 10 April 1869; this society being the forerunner of today's Royal Philatelic Society. He gave the very first lecture to the society on 29 May 1869 on "The earliest Sydney stamps and on Proofs of the Sydney Views". The original block of 38 was cut between 1968 and 1973 by John R. Boker leaving this left hand block of fifteen as the largest multiple and showing a large part of the fourth vertical row, and a block of ten (2 x 5) from the fifth and sixth vertical rows which later appeared in Corinphila sale 58 on May 1975 (lot 6001), and thence went into the Victor Frankenstein collection.rnrnAs a block of 38:rnProvenance: Sir Daniel Cooper (1860).
