  • Lot# : 4678 Great Britain

1881 (March 23): 2½ d. blue, Plate 23, wmk. Crown, lettered FK, used on 1884 cover from London to "The Manager, Cryolite Co., Cryolite Bay, Greenland", tied by hooded 'London EC' datestamp (May 10) in black. Reverse with Copenhagen transit datestamp (May 12) in black and obverse with '25' (öre) charge in blue crayon. Extremely rare - a quite extraordinary destination for British mail at this date.rnNote: Cryolite is an uncommon mineral identified with the once large deposit at Ivigtût on the west coast of Greenland, since depleted. It was historically used as an ore of aluminium and later in the electrolytic processing of the aluminium-rich oxide ore bauxite.
