    1899: De La Rue Appendix sheet (144 x 130 mm.) with proposed but unissued 3 d. Imperforate Essay printed in dull purple with Duty Plate blank and hand-painted in brown with THREE PENCE picked out in Chinese white. Dated at top in manuscript "Oct 2nd 1899" with file number below, the proposal was not deemed clear enough in the contrasting shades offered and the Crown Agents resorted to the "3d." overprint in October 1899.
