Lot# 7511 - Auction 250-256

  • Lot# : 7511 Austrian Levant

Impact of the Napoleonic Wars 1809 (July 2): Entire letter from Dobrota in Montenegro to Venice with very fine 'CATTARO / IN ALBANIA' handstamp (Müller 216a = 300 points) in black, reverse with indistinct Venezia datestamp in red. Illustrated and discussed in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 101. rnNote: After the peace treaty of Schönbrunn in 1809 Austria lost all Adriatic areas such as Triest and Dalmatia and the Illyrian Provinces which became an integral part of the French Empire. Cattaro, nowadays Kotor in Montenegro, had been under French rule since 1805. Due to this development became a landlocked country and France had a direct border with the Ottoman Empire.
