London Printing 1853 (July 1): 5 c. red-brown on blued paper, a fine example infintessimally touched at left, used on entire letter from Santiago to San Fernando tied by six barred target handstamp in black, the entire being clearly dated inside "Sant.o. Julio 4, 1853" and thus used on the fourth day of issue. Sold together with the article in 'Chile Filatelico' dated December 1976 illustrating the find of this 'first day' cover. The earliest recorded cover bearing a 'Colon' stamp and of great rarity. Cert. Moorhouse (1997).rnNote: July 1, 1853 was a Friday, thus it is probable that the stamps were held back and introduced on Monday, July 4, 1853.
