    1862/63: Waterlow Essay printed in black for the central vignette of the first issue, with many similarities to the issued design but the stars closer together and the foreground ship more central, with pencil annotation 'Correos' for blank space alongside 'de Costa Rica' - the word 'Republica' erased in pencil. Rare and interesting artwork of great importance to the first issue.
