Malta 1798 (June 11): Entire letter, an eye-witness account of the Siege of Malta (taken the following day by Napoleon's forces), written on board the "La Sensible" (23 Prairial an 6) "nous arrivons devant Valletta, ville capital Malte" and the letter goes on to mention Bonaparte's plans for the invasion of Egypt which were quickly put into motion - Bonaparte stayed but six days on the island but left 4'000 troops to garrison Malta and then sailed directly on to Egypt. The 'Sensible' avoided the Battle of the Nile, sailing westwards where this letter was mailed with straight line CADIZ handstamp in red and charged '20' due on receipt.
