    1812 (Aug 20): Entire letter written from Smolensk, Russia just two days after the first major battle of the Russian Campaign, mailed back to Paris and struck with fair 'No. 11 / GRANDE-ARMÉE' handstamp in red, second numeral unclear, with reverse showing Paris arrival datestamp (Sept 14) in red. Letter begins 'Nous sommes entre dans la ville on set batu pendant quatre jour...'. A very rare entire from this Campaign: the Russians set fire to Smolensk and retreated using the famous 'scorched earth' policy thereafter.
