    Gibraltar 1862: 40 c. orange, single usage on small 1867 envelope from Marseille to Cecil Smith, His British Majesty's Consul in Rabat, Morocco sent care of the Postmaster in Gibraltar, tied by 2240 gros chiffres of Marseille (Oct 6). Underpaid and struck with framed AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT in red and '24' centavos charge raised. 'Gibraltar' cds of transit (Oct 11) at left and reverse with Bordeaux and San Roque transit cds's. A fine and appealing cover - both destinations being extremely scarce. Cert. Boule (1999).

    Note: For the tariff of 1860 the letter could have travelled franked at 40 centimes to either Gibraltar or Rabat, but not by this route.
