Victoria 1857 (April 27): Cover from Geelong to Emmelsbühl, near Tondern, North Schleswig, Denmark franked for 1/4½ d. rate with 1854 1 s. blue and Throne 2 d. brown lilac tied by Gewelong "2" numeral obliterator; underpaid 2½ d. but not noted and mailed via Southampton with "London / Paid" transit cds (Aug 24) in red and manuscript "8" pence credit to Britain. Reverse of cover with Danish P.O. of transit (Aug 26). On front italic 'franco' in black applied in Hamburg (Van Der Linden fig. 1425) with "3" (skilling) in manuscript due from recipient for journey from Hamburg to Emmelsbühl. A remarkable and extremely rare cover in excellent quality for a journey of this length and duration (121 days). Illustrated in Palmer on page 20.

1856 (Jan 17): Entire letter written from Omeo to Sylt in Schleswig, franked by 1854 6 d. orange-yellow neatly tied by Melbourne "1" numeral in black, with reverse showing Melbourne datestamp (Jan 30), AUSTRALIAN PACKET-LIVERPOOL datestamp (April 26) and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (April 30). Partial payment was not allowed and thus charged at full unpaid rate, with manuscript "60" skilling due from recipient (6 d. Omeo-Britain + 4 d. share GB -Denmark for '10' in manuscript on front; converted to 8½ sgr. + German sahre of 3½ sgr = 12 sgr. = 51 skilling + 9 skilling for Danish share = 60 sk.). 1856 (May 8): Entire written from Melbourne to Copenhagen endorsed 'pr. Mermaid' at double rate, franked by 1854 6 d. orange-yellow horizontal pair neatly tied by Melbourne "1" numerals in black, with reverse showing Melbourne datestamp, AUSTRALIAN PACKET-LIVERPOOL datestamp (June 9) and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (June 12). Partial payment was not allowed and thus charged at full unpaid rate, with manuscript "119" skilling due from recipient on reverse (manuscript British rate on front 1 s. 8 d. + German share of 7 sgr. = 24 sgr. 1856 (Dec 5): Registered cover to Brünnsbuttel, Schleswig franked by 1854 6 d. orange and Registration 1 s. rose-pink & blue tied by "5" numeral in black, with oval "Registered / GPO" datestamp below applied in London (March 16, 1857) and "Crown / Registered" in red. Framed "Recomandirt" above and reverse with Aachen transit in red and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (March 18). Plentiful manuscript rates with total amount due "65" skilling. A rare and most appealing cover. Signed Holcombe.
Note: The rates are 6 d. Victoria to Britain, 6 d. registration, 6 d. credited forward. Additionally the 1/7½ registered rate from Britain to Denmark should have been paid, less the 6 d. forward credit = 1/1½d., but noted on cover (over GPO datestamp) at 1/1 d. = 11¼ sgr., rounded up to 11½ sgr. + German share of 3½ sgr = 14 sgr. 1858: Registered cover intelligently opened for display, franked over edges of cover probably for protection against theft of contents, mailed to Canton tessin, Switzerland endorsed "via England", franked by 1854 1 s. blue in a fine horizontal pair and a defective strip of three, 1857/58 rouletted 4 d. red in a horizontal pair all tied by "6" numeral obliterators in black. Reverse with Melbourne (Sept 28) transit and oval London "Registered / GPO" datestamp (Dec 20) and two broken red wax seals applied in transit through France. Variety of manuscript rates and Locarno arrival cds (Christmas Day) on flap at top. Despite faults, a dramatic cover with a 5 shillings and 8 d. prepaid rate. 1859 (Oct 17): Cover from Melbourne to Copenhagen endorsed 'per Emeu through France' franked by 1858 rouletted 6 d. blue (2) tied by "1" numeral obliterator in black. "Australie V. Suez / Amb. C." transit in Marseille in red (Dec 6) thence via Thurn & Taxis and Damish P.O. in Hamburg (Dec 9). Treated as unpaid on arrival (10½ d. underpaid on despatch) and charged on reverse in manuscript "29¾" (silvergroschen) and on front in red crayon "145" skilling due + "40" sk. for Hamburg to Copenhagen. A remarkable and fine cover of great visual appeal. Illustrated in Palmer on page 20.

1859 (Aug 16): Cover endorsed "Overland Mail" to Brünnsbuttel, Schleswig-Holstein via Marseilles and Hamburg, franked by 1859 perf. Emblems 4 d. rose-red (single and vertical pair) tied by Melbourne "1" obliterator. Circular "Australie V. Suez / Amb. A." in red on front (Oct 6) and reverse with Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (Oct 9) alongside manuscript "11¼" (silvergroschen). The cover was prepaid 1 shilling of the 1/10½ d. due for the double rate but partial payment was not allowed. Therefore charged "15" (schillinge) in manuscript equivalent to 48 skilling and a further 4 sk. due for Danish share on arrival. A delightful and very rare cover. Cert. Perry (2006).
