    1880 (April 1): Bantam ½ d. rose, plate 15, a horizontal pair and a horizontal strip of three, used on 1881 cover marked "Private" in manuscript from Larnaca to Peter Rylands MP in London, tied by five strikes of the "942" numeral obliterator in black. "LARNACA / CYPRUS" cds of despatch below (Feb 8) and Loindon arrival cds (Feb 21) on reverse. The cover with slight wrinkles and ageing and somewhat roughly opened at top but a very rare #1 franking.rnNote: Peter Rylands was a wire manufacturer in Lancashire and a Liberal politician who was active in local government and, at this date, was MP for Burnley.rnProvenance: Collection "Aphrodite", Spink, London, 24 Feb 2009, lot 68.
