1854: Desmadryl 5 c. red-brown, a fine appearing example with just shaved to large margins, tied to 1855 entire letter from Santiago to Bordeaux endorsed "Par voie de Panama et d'Angleterre" prepaying the internal rate, tied by circular target handstamp in black. SANTIAGO despatch cds in red at right (March 14) and two line "PANAMA / TRANSIT" in red, reverse with London cds (May 3) in red. Charged '21' décimes handstruck in black: tariff of 1 August 1849 for a single letter. Fine for this, a rare usage of this early issue on a cover mailed overseas. Signed Peter Holcombe. Cert. London transit cds (June 30) and struck there with framed "GB / 2F 87½ c." accountancy marking in black. Calais transit on front alongside '12' décimes due handstamp in black. 1856/62: Santiago print 5 c. dull reddish-brown, a used example with exceptional large margins showing portion of adjoining stamp at right, on 1858 mourning cover from Santiago to Bordeaux endorsed "voie de Panama et d'Angleterre", tied by target handstamp in black with Santiago cds in red (May 31). Cover mailed via London (July 17) without Accountancy marking being applied, Calais transit (July 18) and struck there with '12' décimes handstruck due in black. 1872: 1 r. orange, a single example used on 1878 cover from Quito to Paris tied by gros chiffres "3154" in black (formerly of Rixheim, Alsace), reverse with British P.O. GUAYAQUIL transit cds in black (July 30) and obverse showing circular "PANAMA TRANSIT" cds in black (Aug 4). Struck in London (Aug 28) with "T / 1-10" accountancy marking in blue, thence via Calais with red cds and charged with handstruck '16' décimes in black. Small inclusions to envelope but an extraordinarily rare stamp on a letter mailed overseas and the first such this describer has handled. Certs. Carried by PSNC "Cordillera" with circular "OUTRE-MER / BORDEAUX" entry marking in red (Sept 8) on obverse and charged with handstruck '12' décimes due handstamp in black: tariff of 12 décimes for under 10 grams of 1 July 1871. 1867: ABN 5 c. red, a used example tied to 5 c. violet postal stationery envelope to Paris by cork handstamps in black. "Santiago / Chile" despatch cds in purple (Feb 9, 1875) and British P.O. CALLAO cds verso (Feb 21), three line dated "PANAMA / TRANSIT" in black (Feb 28). Transferred to French Packet "La Ville de Bordeaux" and struck with fine octagonal "PANAMA / PAQ. FR. 1867: ABN 10 c. blue, a used example on 1875 cover from Tomé to Paris endorsed "via Panama" cancelled in black with "TOMÉ / CHILE" despatch (Aug 8) in purple with Valparaiso transit cds in red on reverse. Mailed via Panama where carried by commercial, non Contract, Steamer and struck initially on arrival with "OUTRE-MER / LE HAVRE" in red (Oct 5) deleted in manuscript. Replaced by circular "PAYS. ETR. Pacific War 1877: Rouletted 10 c. blue, a single example on 1880 cover endorsed "via Panama y Southampton" to Paris, probably from Chilean occupied Arica (Company imprint on reverse 'Arica & Tacna') tied by black cork handstamp. British "PANAMA TRANSIT" cds in black (Jan 9, 1881) and carried via New York with scarce "NEW YORK (Jan 20) / PANAMA TRANSIT" on reverse in black and "T / CENTIMES 25" on obverse in blue. Paris arrival (Feb 3) in blue and charged '75c." due in red. Sensible flap repair - a rare usage. Cert. Taxed on arrival (a journey time of nearly two months) with manuscript '50' in pencil and franked by 1881 Postage Due 20 c., black and 40 c. black horizontal pair for the deficiency (Maury T17+T19). London transit cds on reverse (Aug 30) and struck there with framed "GB / 2F 87½ c." accountancy marking, charged with handstruck '12' décimes due on arrival.
