The cover was then forwarded through and backstamped at Singapore (Feb 18), Calcutta (March 20), Tista Bridge (border between Darjeeling and Sikkim, March 22), to Gangtok where it was neatly re-adressed to Yatung, Tibet, where it received an arrival cds of March 23. Their correspondence continued unabated until his death in 1868. To quote Robert Payne from "The White Rajah of Sarawak", Brooke met Miss Coutts at a party hosted by Queen Victoria "Born to great wealth, she was determined to use her money as a weapon to advance her humanitarian ideas, and when the Rajah spoke to her about the Dyaks and Malays plagued by their feudal Sultans and by Ilanun pirates, still living in the Middle Ages, her heart went out to them" (and, allegedly, to Brooke himself, although rumours also abounded on Brooke's homosexuality). rnrnProvenance: Christie's, Singapore, 26 March 1994, lot 1242.Ausruf : 30.000 CHFZuschlag : nicht verkauftLosnr. : 4746 Kap der Guten Hoffnung

1855/63: 1 d. deep rose-red on cream paper, a used sheet marginal block of four with large margins all round and of dramatic appearance on 1861 second sheet of entire letter to Cape Town; cancelled by two strikes of the CGH obliterator in black. Reverse with oval framed PORT ELIZABETH despatch (March 18) and CAPE TOWN arrival (March 21) in red. First pair affected by vertical file fold and a further stamp with repaired tear, manuscript 'Lot 7' in ink at right (which rather dates the covers provenance back to the early 1900's), however despite the imperfections, a cover of great visual appeal and considerable rarity.Ausruf : 1.200 CHFZuschlag : 1.700 CHFLosnr. : 4762 Kap der Guten Hoffnung
