Embossed Issues 1857/61: 3 d. rose, the fine used vertical tête-bêche pair, of excellent impression and huge margins all round for this rare stamp, each impression cancelled lightly by numeral "1" in bars obliterator of Pietermaritzburg in black. An outstanding and famous pair, now safely removed from the original backing piece which accompanies the lot. Just four examples are known: one with heavy manuscript pen cross cancellation, another with two Crown cancels and the third a shoe-shaped defective example offered some time ago at $ 39'000 by Argyll Etkin in Johannesburg. One of the greatest of all British Colonial rarities in absolutely superlative condition. Cert. 1859: De La Rue engraved original Master Die Proof for the 6 d. value on thick card, of outstanding appearance and of great rarity. Sold together with a later 1862 Plate Proof in rose-red on star wmk. paper, notice the difference in the depth of shading on the Queen's right eye, some of which had been lost by the Plate Proof stage of the printing for the later issue. There are believed to be have been just six of the Die Proofs in black struck - one is housed in the collection of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.Ausruf : 1.500 CHFZuschlag : 3.000 CHFLosnr. : 6091 Natal
1862: De La Rue engraved original progressive Die Proof for the 3 d. value on thick card, of outstanding appearance with the corner tablets showing four dots instead of the 'circle in square' design eventually issued: the four lines forming the square yet to be added, a marvellous and extremely rare Proof.rnrnProvenance: Stanley Gibbons, London, 5-6 March 1981, lot 490.Ausruf : 1.500 CHFZuschlag : 3.600 CHFLosnr. : 6092 Natal
