1847 (Sept 21): Entire letter sent prepaid from La Guayra via London Forwarding Agent 'H. Rudall' to Teneriffe, Canary Islands, struck on despatch with circular CORREOS DE VENEZUELA / LA GUAYRA / FRANCA in red; with annotation of contents "$100 of gold" and endorsed on arrival at Forwarding Agent LE BRUN & DAVIDSON / TENERIFFE with oval cachet in black on reverse; charged for insurance at 5% on despatch "5 rs. Vn." in manuscript at top and '1s.' charged in London and paid, presumably by the Forwarding Agent. A splendid and extremely early Transatlantic Money Letter from South America. Cert. 1859: Fine Impression 1 r. blue, a used example with large margins all round, on January 13, 1859 cover datelined at Cucuta, Colombia, mailed at Tachira, Venezuela (some 75 kms. from Cucuta) to Maracaibo and tied by bold strike of circular CORREOS DE VENEZUELA / TACHIRA / FRANCA handstamp in red. Internally docketed as received on January 27 in Maracaibo. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XVI on page 29. A superb and extremely rare cover used in the second week of issue of the first Venezuelan adhesives. Cert. 1859: Fine impression 2 r. red, a used example with large margins on three sides, imperceptibly grazed at base, used on the famous May 23, 1859 entire letter to Marseille tied by "3½" weight marking in black. Carried by British Packet with London transit cds (June 16) on reverse in red and struck there with framed Accountancy marking "GB / 1F 60c." in black. Calais transit cds on front and handstruck '16' décimes due marking in black. A splendid and extremely rare entire. Illustrated in "The Early Stamps of Venezuela" by Lt. General C.W. 1859/62: The range of first issues, both fine and coarse impressions with 57 stamps with ½ r. (37) including ½ r. orange in an unused marginal block of four and strip of three, a used strip of four and a strip of three in the yellow shade, two pairs cancelled VALENCIA, single cancelled at Caracas in red on piece, range of weight markings etc., also 1 r. blue (11) with unused pair, fine used examples cancelled with weight marks 0, 5 and 6; 2 r. red (9) with unused examples (6) and used (3), one with 'star' cancel in black. 1863/64: Eagle ½ r. orange, a horizontal strip of three used on September 14, 1866 entire letter from Trujillo to Caracas, margins tocuhed in places due to the narrow setting, each cancelled by "0" weight markings in black, annotated as received on October 1st. Illustrated in Edition D'Or XVI on page 105. 1863/64: Eagle 1 r. deep blue, a used vertical pair, margins large to touched on one at top, tied to 1864 cover and most part back to Paris by CORREOS / LA GUAIRA datestamp in black. Carried via British Packet with London transit cds (March 29) and struck with with "GB / 1F 60c." Accountancy marking. 1864/65: Eagle Redrawn with 52 pearls in circle, ½ r. orange, the Postal Forgery, a complete sheet of 153 (17 x 9), with large margins all round, some minor folds not affecting the frontal appearance but an astonishing multiple and an important reference sheet for the student of Postal Forgeries, still listed by Stanley Gibbons and Scott. 1865: Postal Forgery ½ r. orange-yellow, a used example on 1865 entire letter from La Guaira to Caracas tied by bold "ADMON DE CORREOS / LA GUAIRA" datestamp (first year of use) in black (Sept 15). A fine and extremely rare entire Scott = $ 3'000.rnrnNote: Scott lists this stamp as 'redrawn', however it is more correctly termed as an unauthorised Postal Forgery whether printed in yellow or orange. For further information see Edition D'Or XVI, page 109, a copy of which is enclosed with the lot. 1865/70: 2 r. yellow, a quadrisected usage to pay the ½ r. real rate, used on 1868 cover from La Guaira to the British Legation in Caracas, endorsed 'per. Correo June 1' at lower left, tied by circular undated "CORREOS / LA GUAIRA." handstamp in black. File fold through the adhesive but a great rarity - this was not a sanctioned issue but used to defraud the Posts, probably with the connivance of the La Guaira Postmaster. Cert.
