1842: Registered cover sent prepaid from Cuenca to Guayaquil, struck with oval framed "CUENCA / FRANCA" and superb strike of rare "Certificacion à Cuenca / Salio en 3 de Abril de 1842" both struck in red, the latter with date inserted in manuscript (Harris types 9+10). 1865: ½ r. blue and an irregular block of five 1 r. yellow on white wove paper, margins just clear on the ½ r. and the block with large margins all round, used on circa 1870 judicial cover to Riobamba endorsed '11¾ ozs.' at top, cancelled by AMBATO datestamps (July 18) in black. 1872: Entire letter from Guayaquil to Lima, Peru franked with horizontal pair of 1865/72 1 r. yellow, margins touched to fine, tied by single strike of dotted FRANCA lozenge in black. Carried on French Paquebot and additionally franked by France 1863/70 30 c. grey brown horizontal pair tied by dotted Anchor lozenge with octagonal GUAYAQUIL / PAQ. FR. F. No. 2 datestamp (May 4) beautifully struck in black (Salles fig. 1383) at base of cover. Carried on the 'Ville de Brest' and reverse with circular LIGNE F / PAQ. FR. 1865: 1 r. dark green, an unused block of four in a magnificent deep shade, ample to large margins all round, positions 4-5 / 13-14 on the sheet of 90 subjects, first stamp (position 4) showing Plate Flaw "Double Frameline" at base, one or two minor bends and trivial aging on large part og., hinged to card for display. A wonderful and extremely rare multiple with a defective block of fourteen (ex Crown Point) and just two blocks of four of this stamp recorded in mint condition, this being the finer. Manuscript notation '12 oz.' alongside and thus correctly rated. 1865: 1 r. yellow, a fine horizontal pair used with 1866 4 r. red in a superb horizontal strip of five, on circa 1870 judicial cover to Ibarra all tied by dotted "3154" gros chiffres handstamps in black with "Quito / Franca" cds at right (July 2). Refolded but with weight notation '2 lbs. 12 ozs.' inside - correctly rated at 24 reales for 48 ounces. 1896 (Oct): Surcharged 5 c. on 20 c. orange, a strip of four used with '1897 1898' overprinted 1894 5 c. green pair and, on reverse 2 c. yellow brown in a strip of four and UPU 1897 1 c. rose (2) all used on 1897 registered cover at 44 grams weight to Manila, Phlippines tied by Quito datestamps in black. Ecuador despatch registered label and both New York and San Francisco (July 19) registration labels applied in transit.
