    1857 (May 26): Embossed 3 d. rose, a horizontal pair used on cover from Pietermaritzburg to Umsunduzi, sent care of George Cato in Durban, the pair cut round at the four corners outside the design, and tied by two strikes of the 'POST OFFICE / P.M.BURG' oval handstamp in black. The cover with vertical file fold and one flap missing but very rare - just four 3 d. pairs are recorded on letter.

    1857 (May 26): Embossed 6 d. green, a used example with enormous even margins all round and of superb fresh colour, tied to 1858 cover from Pietermaritzburg to Thomas Maclear at the Observatory in Cape Town, by oval 'POST OFFICE / P.M.BURG' handstamp in black. Reverse with 'Cape Town / Cape of Good Hope' arrival (Aug 6) in red. A truly magnificent cover in the foremost quality for a first issue usage. Cert. RPSL (1987).rnrnNote: Sir Thomas Maclear (1794-1879) arrived in the Cape in 1834 and became the Queen's astronomer at the Cape. Prior to this he had worked with John Herschel and was later to become a friend and colleague of David Livingstone. There is even a crater on the Moon named after him.

    1857 (May 26): Embossed 6 d. green, a used example with good margins all round and of fine colour, tied to 1858 cover from Pietermaritzburg to Glasgow by oval 'POST OFFICE / P.M.BURG' handstamp in black. Carried on the 'HMS Southampton' from Cape Town, reverse with London cds in red (May 26) and Glasgow arrival (same day) in blue. Charged '6' (pence) due to pay in manuscript on obverse. Minor wrinkles to envelope but of fresh and fine appearance. A rare cover. Cert.     1857 (May 26): Embossed 1 s. buff, a used example with good margins all round, cancelled with part oval handstamp, the cancellation bringing out the embossed value very clearly for this issue, slight embossing split at top and pinhole do not detract from an attractive example of this rare stamp.     Overprinted by Keith & Co. 1869 (Aug 23): 3 d. blue, intermediate perf. 14-16, no wmk., overprinted 'POSTAGE.' (Type 7e) in black, a horizontal pair used on 1869 cover to 'Camp Poona', Bombay Presidency, India tied in black with "Durban / Natal" cds of depatch at left (Oct 23). Framed BOMBAY / SHIP LETTER / BEARING at left, reverse with two Bombay transits (Jan 4, 1870) and Poona arrival on front. The cover has been sympathetically restored at left and at top, but very rare and believed to be the sole usage of a 'Keith' overprint to this unusual destination.

POSTAGE (14½ mm.) in black and rare usage of 1877 "½ / HALF" on ½ d. dull rose all tied to 1877 cover to Cincinatti, USA (Adams correspondence) in black with fair 'Durban / Natal' cds below (June 18). Reverse with 'New York / Paid All' duplex of transit (July 23) and manuscript docketing on front (July 31). Minor imperfections but a rare combination of issues, the Provisional "½" on cover being of great rarity with only a handful recorded.
