Reverse with 'Rockhampton / Queensland' cds (Aug 2) and 'Ship Letter / Sydney' datestamp of receipt (Aug 8) in black. The envelope with two file folds not affecting the delightful appearance of a rare cover. Small Star, clean-cut perf. 14-16, the famous unused horizontal pair, of tremendous colour and near perfect centering, fresh and very fine (and finer than the only other pair we can trace which was ex Ferrary, sale 10, 18-20 June 1924, lot 431) with large part original gum. (6 d.) value, handpainted on thick board, 175 x 102 mm., in mauve, deep violet, pale yellow, deep brown and black. A dramatic and particularly wonderful Essay, believed to be one of the two surviving handpainted Essays for Queensland issues. Probably unadopted due to the nature of the Battle scene but nevetheless a superb example of Elliott's artwork. (6 d.) value, handpainted on thick board, 115 x 188 mm., in brown, grey, pale yellow, deep brown and Chinese white, and signed at lower right by the artist. A dramatic and particularly wonderful Essay, believed to be one of the two surviving handpainted Essays for Queensland issues. Reverse with pencil annotations "Channel 1/20 wide outside design" and dated "4.5.00". 1900: Anglo-Boer War Patriotic Fund, sheet headed "Queensland Patriotic Stamps / Colour and design approved for 1 d. / Colour but not design approved for 2 d." and showing 1 d. imperforate Proofs in mauve and in violet and adopted Imperforate Proof of 2 d. value in violet; with below "Essays for Colour" and showing the 1 d. value in eleven different colours ranging from bright carmine, through deep blue to yellow-green; addressed in ink to the 'Honourable G. W. Gray, M.L.C., with the Postmaster General's compliments'.
