1839 (Jan 4): Entire letter from Calcutta to Bordeaux endorsed 'via Alexandria & Marseilles', struck on reverse with 'Calcutta / Steam Letter' despatch in red (Paid 1 rupee 7 annas in manuscript), with obverse showing framed INDIA in red, oval framed 'Care of / Mr. Waghorn / Suez' in black (Sidebottom / Smith type 3). French Post Office 'Alexandrie' cds (Feb 17), framed INDES ORIEN / PAR / ALEXANDRIE in black, 'Paquebots / De La / Mediterranee' in black and circular 'Purifié Au Lazaret / Malte' of transit. Illustrated in Smith on page 32. A rare and most attractive entire.
