  • Losnr. : 5003 Ägypten (Königreich)

1798 (Sept 17): Entire letter written (1 complimentaire, year 6) from 'Vieux Cairo' via Alexandria to Douai, France written by future General Delegorgue to his cousin, discussing the Battle of the Pyramids and the defeat of the Mamelukes, struck with straight line ALEXANDRIE handstamp in capital letters (Type 1) with straight line VOYE DE MER / MAR(SEILLE) above in black and charged '16' sols due in manuscript. The letter is fascinating with talks of his promotion to General and indicating his address: 'Bataille Division Menou, Egypte par Toulon'. Illustrated in Smith on page 8. An exceptionally rare marking and one of just a handful of letters recorded that went successfully through the British blockade.
