    Panama-Portovelo-Cartagena-Santa Marta-Riohacha Route 1816 (Feb 16): Entire letter from Portovelo to Panamá, distance 26 leagues / 145 kms., struck with contracted PORTOVELO handstamp in red-brown. No notation of rate but under ½ ounce and thus postage wiould have been 1½ reales. Interesting contents regarding a large shipment of silver. The earliest recorded usage of this handstamp and unique during the Colonial period although sent during the Revolutionary period.
