Malaysian States - Negri Sembilan 1836 (August 16): Entire letter from Fort Lismore, in Naning 'State' at this date (as stated in the text of the letter), written by A. Robertson, the sole European Officer at the Fort to Lt. Colonel P. Vans Agnew at East India House in London and endorsed at lower left 'via Singapore'. Reverse with framed INDIA LETTER / GRAVESEND struck in red and London arrival datestamp (Feb 9, 1837) in red and rated 10 pence to pay in manuscript. A remarkable letter discussing the locals and the lack of cultivation except for rice "a great part of which is performed by women" and a visit to a Tin Mine in the Rumbowe Country (Rembau) "the soil is dug out of pits 6 or 7 feet deep, washed in a small stream, which carries off the lighter soil, and the Ore remains"...."the country is in all directions well watered and I have no doubt Spices might be cultivated". A rare entire, the earliest recorded from Naning.
