1862 (Oct 27): Entire letter from Triest to Alexandria endorsed 'Col Vapore Austr. diretto' with very fine oval COL VAPORE DA TRIESTE struck in blue on arrival, with ALEXANDRIEN datestamp in same ink (Nov 3) on reverse. Charged '30' kreuzer due for a double weight letter. The earliest recorded usage with the 'Trieste' slug in the handstamp: it was removeable and 'Berutti' or 'Smirne' could be added as desired.
