1586 (Sept 29): Entire letter in Italian from Aleppo to Marseille, the cross hatching in manuscript at top indicating pre-payment. The Turks at this juncture and for most of the 16th Century were at War with the West, trade was stifled and correspondence dwindled, and this letter is therefore most unusual.
