    1842 (Aug 6): Printed OHMS cover from the Principle Superintendent of Convict's Office in Sydney to the Police Magistrate in Newcastle, with faint "♚ / FREE" in red at right. Docketed and countersigned "In the absence of the Principal Supt. Conv's, Thomas Ryan". Appointed as commandant at Norfolk Island from September 1839 until March 1840, Ryan (1790-1846) later left for India with the 50th Regiment where he fought at Maharajpore in 1843 and died from wounds inflicted at the Battle of Sobraon in 1846.rnrnProvenance: Collection Brian Peace, Prestige, Melbourne, 27 July 2009, lot 1109.
