1840 (June 9): Prepaid entire letter from Burwash, Sussex to Sydney, endorsed 'Paid 8 Pence' at lower left with italic "Burwash / Penny Post" in brown and LAMBERHURST cds in blue (June 9) with London red datestamp and oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / JU 10 / 1840 / LONDON" in red (Robertson S48). Reverse with oval "♚ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / SYDNEY" in black (Oct 4). Charged '3' (pence) for an inward Ship Letter and struck on arrival with octagonal framed "NOT TO BE / FOUND" in red. Content states: "Your brother Richard is married and was coming but on hearing of such very ill treatment that you met with he now refuses to come..." and the letter continues beseeching his daughter it would be best to marry.
