Losnr. : 7619 Österreich. Levante
Competitors of the Austrian Lloyd - Italy 1863 (Nov 3): Unpaid envelope from Cairo via Posta Europea to Alexandria, endorsed "via Trieste, Wien" but ignored, sent on Italian Steamer via Corfu to Ancona and further bz rail to Stettin; struck with "POSTA EUROPEA / CAIRO" in blue (Nov 3), transferred with "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO / POSTE ITALIANE" cds and framed "PIROSCAFI / POSTALI / ITALIANI" alongside. Reverse with Ancona, Ancona-Como TPO, Como-Collico TPO, Chur-St. Gallen TPO & Friedrichshafen transit cds's and Stettin distribution cds (Nov 16). The Italian post noted "Credito Italo L 1.60" for a double weight unfranked letter to which the Swiss transit of '20' rappen was added, resulting in '54' kreuzer due to which '9' kreuzer were added for the GAPU, resulting in '21' silbergroschen which had to be paid by the receiver. One backflap missing and the cover a little bit tatty, but a very interesting item showing the competition of different postal services, illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 322.Ausruf : 350 CHFZuschlag : 800 CHF
