Austrian Levant Rates 1856 (Jan 25): Cover from Trieste to Constantinople bearing 1854 3 kr. red and 9 kr. blue in fresh colours with 'liliput' cut, tied by "TRIEST 25 / 1 Früh" cds in black, reverse with "CONSTANTINOPEL" arrival (Feb 2) cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 387). An attractive and early prepaid cover showing the 12 kr. rate to Constantinople, illustrated in 'Die Österreichische Post in der Levante' on page 266 and in the Ferchenbauer handbook part IV on page 526. rnNote: From 1851 and up to 1866 postal rates in the Levant were organized like those in Austria, depending on weight and distance. For mail to the majority of Post Offices 12 kreuzer CM had to be paid up to 1858, thereafter 20 kreuzer ÖW. In addition to these Levant rates the Austrian rate and possible rate components from outside the German-Austrian Postal Union had to be added. This cover had only to be franked with 12 kreuzer CM for the Lloyd because it was despatched in Trieste.
