    Introduction of Stamps in the Austrian Levant 1863 (Sept 11): Double rate Letter sheet from Alexandria to Venice with receiver's docketing inside, franked by 1863 Arms 5 s. rose and 15 s. brown in a vertical strip of three with the design strongly shifted to the left, all perf. 14, fresh colour and well embossed, tied by clear "ALEXANDRIEN 11/9" cds's in blue (Tranmer fig. 5). Reverse with Venice arrival cds (Sept 18) and distribution handstamp. The 5 s. stamp previously applied around the edge of the cover resulting in a fold, the cover re-folded, imperfections of no importance and mentioned only for accuracy. This extraordinary cover shows the earliest known usage of Austrian Levant stamps and is thereby an essential item for an advanced collection of this area. Due to delivery problems, this date could not be kept and the earliest known usage is this cover from September 11. There are two other covers known from Alexandria and Khartoum which were cancelled on September 12.
