    Provisional Issue 1861 (March): Woodblock 1 d. carmine on laid paper, a used square pair, just touched at left with clear large margins on three sides and sheet marginal, incomplete scissor cut touching the design of one stamp of the pair, prior to application on 1861 cover to 'Natal' with Perkins Bacon 1853 4 d. blue on blued paper, with just clear to large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp, tied by bold strikes of CGH obliterators in black. Reverse with oval framed PORT ELIZABETH datestamp in red (May 27). The cover has an ironed horizontal crease and has been re-backed internally to prevent the central crease, away from the stamps, becoming worse, this being done prior to the Pack sale. A sensational and most attractive cover with a rare multiple and mixed issue franking. Cert. BPA (2018).rnNote: The addressee, George C. Cato, was an agent for hunters and traders wishing to visit KwaZulu Natal. He fought against the Boers in 1842 and arranged the sad Elephant hunting for Ivory: a noted example being 95 shot in a single day.
